Reconfiguring National Identities amid Multiple Crises
September 18–20, 2026 | Belgrade, Serbia
Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory of the University of Belgrade, in cooperation with the Association for the Study of Nationalities, is pleased to host the 2026 ASN European Conference, Reconfiguring National Identities amid Multiple Crises, in Belgrade, from September 18 to 20, 2026.
Returning to Belgrade twenty years after ASN’s first European conference in the city, the event reaffirms Belgrade’s significance as a site for critical reflection on nationalism, identity, memory, and political transformation in Europe and Eurasia. Bringing together more than 160 scholars across panels, roundtables, and book discussions, the conference will provide a significant platform for exchange among established researchers, early-career scholars, and intellectual communities working on identity and nationalism.
Keynote addresses will be delivered by Siniša Malešević (University College Dublin) and Florian Bieber (University of Graz).
The conference is not open to the general public. Recordings of the keynote lectures and other selected programme events will be made available on IFDT’s YouTube channel following the conference.

Association for the Study of Nationalities (ASN)
The Association for the Study of Nationalities (ASN) brings together an international and interdisciplinary community of scholars through its Annual World Convention, the journal Nationalities Papers, and Virtual ASN events and discussions. The 2026 conference in Belgrade is part of ASN’s European Conference series, which brings the ASN community together in different European locations every two years.
The ASN World Convention, the largest international and interdisciplinary scholarly gathering of its kind, will return to New York in May 2027. The forthcoming Call for Proposals will invite contributions on a wide range of topics related to nationalism, ethnicity, ethnic conflict, national identity, migration and diasporas, across regional and thematic sections.
Belgrade Conference Organization and Support
The ASN European Conference in Belgrade is organized by the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory, University of Belgrade, in cooperation with the Association for the Study of Nationalities (ASN).
The conference is supported in part by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, grant no. 7422, through the project Imagining a Nation: The Contesting Serbian National Narratives (XX–XXI Century) – IMAGINATION.
